Early years
Though he has achieved an incredible level of fame and success through his music and professional career, Eminem’s life was not always so glamorous. He was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III in Missouri in 1972, though he spent most of his upbringing near Detroit. His music identifies strongly with his childhood experience in Warren, Michigan, a largely downtrodden and impoverished area. His home life was unstable, and he was raised by a single mother who often struggled to feed and clothe him. The dysfunctionality of his home life was something that fueled Eminem to pursue artistic expression. He developed a deep interest in the written word through comic books, though he never did well in school. Ultimately, Eminem would drop out of high school after spending several years trying to pass the ninth grade. He worked several part-time jobs to help support himself and his mother, and began to pursue rapping more seriously.

Rise to fame
Eminem’s career has its origins in the Detroit underground rap scene. He first began to gain notoriety by participating in freestyle battles during the lunch periods at rival high schools. Over time he earned access to performance stages, developing battle rhymes which he would target at his competition. Notably, Eminem performed and battled regularly at a historic venue known as the Hip-Hop Shop, which allowed him to gain a broader audience. He became known as one of the most ferocious battle rappers in the area, but faced some aversion as a Caucaisan person trying to make it in a predominantly African-American industry. While he was beginning to write, rap and record on his own more regularly, he was still struggling to find the launchpad that his career needed. He found his first taste of success by competing in the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles in 1997. While he didn’t win, he did generate enough hype and publicity to gain the attention of famed rapper Dr. Dre, who quickly signed him to Aftermath Records.

Commercial success
From that point, Eminem’s career skyrocketed. He released his first major album, The Slim Shady LP, on Aftermath in 1999 and experienced unparalleled success. The record went triple platinum, selling more than 3 million copies within its first year in stores. While he has maintained personal struggles with his family and substance abuse for much of his career, Eminem has put out more than six other records. They include such titles as Infinite, The Eminem Show, The Marshall Mathers LP, Encore, Relapse, Recovery and The Marshall Mathers LP 2. He has collaborated with musicians across all genres, ranging from Jay-Z to Elton John. Perhaps most impressively, Eminem has won a total of 15 Grammy Awards as of early 2015. He maintains a rigorous touring schedule, regularly selling out large arenas around the world.
