Early years

While her early exposure to sound and performance was predominantly driven by her family, her first true experience with professional music came while she was in high school. She was contacted by Praskazrel Michel, a fellow musician, and asked if she would have interest in forming a musical group with him. Not long after that, the two were joined by Michel’s cousin, now-famous male musical artist and rapper Wyclef Jean, and their group was born. They called themselves the Fugees, and began working together in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, they came to experience a fair amount of success with their debut album Blunted on Reality in 1994. The record put the group on the map, igniting an underground fan base that quickly spread. There second and final album, The Score, was a massive commercial success, earning them a Grammy award for Best Rap Album in 1996. The Score sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.

Solo Career
In 1997, The Fugees split up following a series of turbulent events between Hill and Jean, who were romantically involved during much of the group’s tenure. All of the artists involved went on to focus on their solo careers, with Hill’s gaining incredible success through the release of her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which hit stores in 1998. The album was widely embraced by her fan base and also attracted new listeners to her music through an increased focus on her vocal abilities. The record also came to be widely touted by feminists for serving as an indication and expression of female power within the entertainment industry.
