|Troye Sivan first dipped his toes in the entertainment industry through acting. However, he started uploading YouTube videos soon after. Flash forward a couple years, and he has millions of followers and fans from around the world. In a short amount of time he has emerged as one of music’s most refreshing young artists.
The early years
Troye Sivan Mellet was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. However, his family moved to Perth, Australia, because of the rising crime in South Africa. He attended school up until 2009 when he began distance education. Though Sivan is his middle name, he adopted it as stage name. Sivan engulfed himself in the arts from an early age. He acted in plays and some short films. In 2007, he uploaded some videos of himself singing onto YouTube. Then, in 2008 he was cast as a young James Howlett in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” After that, the acting bug set in, and he continued to pursue roles. In 2009, Sivan landed the lead role in the movie “Spud,” a film adaptation of South African novelist John van de Ruit. It tells the story of a young boy named John Milton and the trials and tribulations during his first year at an elite boarding school for boys. The film was received well by fans and critics alike.
The YouTube days
Although Sivan was relatively well-known by the public for his acting, it was his videos that really set off his career. After a five-year break in posting videos, in 2012 he started uploading video blogs onto his channel again. He quickly gained a large social media following through various platforms. He continued posting videos, even collaborating with other YouTube users like Tyler Oakley.
Getting into music
Sivan first tried to pursue music during his youth. He sang at local telethons and even made it into the finale of “StarSearch” in 2007. In 2008, he released his first EP, Dare to Dream. It wasn’t until 2013 that he finally was signed to the label UMI Australia. In the summer of 2014, Sivan released his second EP, TRXYE. The EP debuted at No. 1 in over 55 countries. The single for the album, “Happy Little Pill,” also did extremely well, peaking at No. 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart.
In September 2015, Sivan released another EP, called Wild. It was only three songs, and was rumored to be the start of a project that would be released at a later date. Then, on December 5, 2015, Sivan released his first studio album, called “Blue Neighbourhood.” It’s a collection of dreamy pop songs with poetic lyrics and heavy themes. Sivan released videos before the full album was available. Most interesting was the one for the track “Talk Me Down.” It’s a portrayal of the death of Sivan’s childhood love interest, who died by jumping off a cliff after his father’s funeral. Sivan provided information about suicide hotlines after the video’s release. The album also features collaborations from several artists like Broods, Tkay Maidza and Betty Who.
